Neighbourhood planning
- gives communities the power to develop a vision of their neighbourhood and contribute to the development and growth of their area.
- provides tools for local people, so they get the right types of development for their community
- ensures that the desire of the neighbourhood is aligned with the overall needs and priorities of the wider local area
- is a community-led process, meaning local residents and organisations are involved, rather than solely relying on the local planning authority.
In 2023 Almondsbury Parish Council agreed to facilitate the setting up of an Almondsbury Parish Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group as the first step in a long process to create a Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish.
The aim is to create a Neighbourhood Plan very much driven by residents, working in partnership with the Parish Council, local businesses and community organisations, setting out the aspirations of residents for the onward development of the Parish within the framework of the South Gloucestershire Council’s (SGC) Local Plan. https://beta.southglos.gov.uk/new-local-plan/
In the Policies we aim to create the Steering Group will be looking to set out the aspirations of residents for the onward development of Almondsbury Parish, addressing the specific areas consistently raised by residents through the initial and ongoing consultation processes and which most influence the development of our community and the character of the Parish.
The process for the making of the Neighbourhood Plan involves various legislative stages that the Plan will have to pass before being formally adopted, including the gathering of evidence to inform the drafting of the Plan’s policies.
Our aims in creating the Almondsbury Parish Neighbourhood Plan are to:
- Promote the building of suitable housing for local and incoming people
- Protect our valued green space and natural environment
- Support the local economy
- Maintain the character of the Parish

- Inviting you to public meetings
- Informing you about the Steering Group’s meetings and workshops
- Asking for participation in various Consultation exercises
- Publishing the results of Surveys
- Explaining the Processes and varying Legislative Stages as they arise
- Providing a Library of Documents gathered to inform the drafting of the Policies and Plan
At the end of the process, once the Plan is created and reviewed by SGC, there will be a Referendum to enable the formal adoption by SGC of the Neighbourhood Plan in the planning system as part of the Statutory Development Plan.
